  • Abstract
An Ad Hoc Committee for Solid-State Instructional Materials has created a package of instructional materials that is designed to modernize and revitalize introductory chemistry courses at both the college and secondary school levels. A book linking all of the instructional components has recently been completed and is being published by the American Chemical Society. Entitled, "Teaching General Chemistry: A Materials Science Companion", the volume is intended to serve as a "one-stop" source of information on the incorporation of solids into the introductory course. The spirit of the project is that virtually every topic typically discussed in an introductory course can be illustrated with solids, including metals, semiconductors, superconductors, and polymers
