Abstract :
An architecture utilizing a space-division optical switch is proposed for large-capacity ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) switching in each cell transfer period. Optical components are applied to the high-speed portion of the switching system, and their wide bandwidth and fast switching features are fully utilized. Basic and extended architectures for a large-capacity switching system, a method for improving system performance, data retiming, and results of a preliminary experiment are discussed
