Abstract :
In this paper we present an approach for robust design of mechanical assemblies using the principles of parametric design and the notion of quantifiers from the approach of QCSP (Quantified constraint satisfaction problem). The QCSP technique is an extension of the CSP (Constraint satisfaction problem), which helps us to integrate the robustness in the parametric design of an assembly. The quantifiers (universal quantifier ldquoforallrdquo and existential quantifier ldquoexistrdquo ) are used to express the design needs with respect to different parameters and variables involved in the parametric design of an assembly. These quantified variables are then evaluated for the robust solutions pertaining to the design search space. This integration has been done with the help of an algorithm which brings together and integrates these notions. A Simple model assembly has been modeled to verify and confirm the proposed approach. The model takes into account, the influence of geometrical deviations as well as the affects these geometric deviations have on the mechanical properties of the assembly. Also, the ability to evaluate the impact of different material selection is also taken into account in the algorithm.
