Abstract :
Bilinear pairings in cryptography have been found to be very useful for various applications recently. In 2006, Das et al. proposed a novel ID-based remote user authentication scheme using bilinear pairings. The ID-based public-key cryptosystem (ID-based PKC) with bilinear pairings defined on elliptic curve can achieve simplifying the certificate management. However, Das et al.´s scheme cannot provide mutual authentication and session key agreement. Furthermore, Das et al.´s scheme suffers from the forgery attack. Since that, some ID-based remote user authentication schemes with smart cards using bilinear pairings are proposed to enhance the security of authentication system. In this paper, we observe that most published pairing-based authentication schemes are vulnerable to specific offline dictionary attack. Thus, we propose an improved ID-based remote user authentication scheme using bilinear pairings. We make security analysis based on Fang et al.´s security requirements. It proves that the proposed scheme can be used widely than other pairing-based remote user authentication schemes in unsecured communication environments.
