Abstract
Like in many other countries, the Indian Power Sector is undergoing drastic upheavals. With the ever increasing demand and dependence on electric power, protection of power system against failures remain a major challenge, particularly against cascading failures that lead to black outs. This paper presents the case for employing grid computing for monitoring and control of the Indian power system scenario in order to append smart and intelligent capabilities to the power sector. The proposed scheme is envisioned to work in tandem with the existing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. In this paper, a grid service for intentional islanding for power systems protection has been developed and demonstrated on a test bed of desktop computers using the Odisha power system network as a case study. GridGain 2.0 has been employed as middleware to setup the test bed.
