Abstract :
The authors find a strong self-defocusing effect in Bacteriorhodopsin in a polyvinylalcohol (polymer) matrix for a Gaussian beam with powers of tens of mW. They also demonstrate efficient four-wave mixing with phase conjugate reflectivities of ~26%. The effects are due to very large dispersive nonlinearities of the protein in the near infrared. Several possible mechanisms to explain these high nonlinearities are proposed and studied
