Abstract :
The reception of signals from several users at the same frequency by an antenna array is considered and analyzed. The method of maximum likelihood is used to estimate the direction of arrival of the various signals at the array as well as to estimate the transmitted signal from each source. It is shown that by performing a QR factorization on the steering vector matrix the corresponding projection matrix takes a simple form. The modified Gram-Schmidt (1986) method for vector orthonormalization is one way to carry out the QR factorization. It is then shown by examples that good estimates of the arrival directions may be realized with sequences of simple single-variable optimizations
