Abstract :
The performance of local area ring networks (LANs) with a high-speed optical transmission medium is studied. In particular, the author evaluates the performance of three different service operations in a token-passing ring LAN, namely single-token, multiple-token and single-packet operation. Simulation is used for evaluating the performance of these service operations. The results are presented in terms of normalized average message delay. The delay is significantly different for different service operations. The simulation program is based upon the event-scheduling approach. The multiple-token operation gives the overall best performance
