Abstract :
The use of vector quantization (VQ) as a modem technique for low signal to noise ratio (SNR) environment is presented. The advantages of using VQ are higher transmission rates for a fixed SNR or lower SNRs for a fixed transmission rate as compared to traditional modem schemes. Development of VQ signal sets for modem design, analog channel modelling computer simulation, and system performance simulation are discussed. Computer simulation results show transmission rates that come close to the Shannon limit for the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Other simulation results showing the advantages of this coding technique for digital transmission applications are presented
