Abstract
The US Department of Defense is facing challenges in the successful acquisition of major defense systems. Systems engineering applied early in the acquisition process has been recognized as a key enabler of acquisition success. This paper presents recent experience with applying a systems approach to the defense acquisition system through the application of business process modeling, with a focus on the critical systems engineering activities and their role in providing the technical foundation for program decisions.
