Abstract :
An efficient estimation method digital transmission error performance using in-service monitoring (ISM) is described. The method estimates the number of errored bits during in-frame and out-frame conditions assuming random error occurrence; calculates second-by-second the occurrence probabilities for CCITT G.821 parameters errored seconds (ES), severely errored seconds (SES), degraded minutes (DM), and unavailable time (UT) and is applicable at any digital hierarchy stage. This method is shown to be effective in the estimation of the G.821 parameters at DS1 using DS2 ISM information with the application of the field data. Stochastic analyses show that the estimated data correlate well with actual measurements. In addition, conservative estimation is discussed from the viewpoint of maintenance
