Riparian buffer strip plays an important role in preventing agricultural non-point pollution and protecting river quality. Purification effect of nitrogen and phosphorus in Nongjiang river was studied by selection of a typical sampling transect, five sampling sites were selected along the sampling transect. Every two neighbouring sampling sites formed a buffer substrip and four buffer substrips were formed, Results showed that Nongjiang riparian buffer strip had the function of obviously purifying the nitrogen and phosphorus in water. The average purification efficiencies of all buffer substrips (except II) of NH4+-N, NO3--N, TN and TON were 84.82%, 54.26%, 42.89% and 25.62% respectively with the order NH4+-N>; NO3--N>; TN>; TON. The purification efficiency of dissolvable orthophosphate and TP was 80.05% and 56.13% respectively. The correlation of TN and TP purification efficiency was significant (r = 0.993, p = 0.01). The accumulation of soil TOC was favorable for the water purification of riparian buffer strip. The nitrogen and phosphorus content in soil and water as well as in plant and water were consistent, therefore, nitrogen and phosphorus content of soil and plant had indirect influence on purification effect.
