Abstract :
The service history of medium-voltage power cables on the US plant sites of a major industrial manufacturer from 1961 through 1990 is summarized. In past years, this company tended to be reactive, using specifications, diagnostic testing and maintenance practices to manage the reliability of their cable distribution systems. Several technologies in insulation systems, terminations, splices, and installation techniques, introduced in recent years, have allowed a more proactive stance to be taken. In addition, because of some specific failure problems, a highly qualified in-house team has been formed to evaluate existing and future technologies and insulation materials to assure a reliable cable system. A brief review is presented of the new technology, reliability programs, and the accelerated cable life test
