Abstract :
This paper describes the capabilities of each component of Czochralski (Cz) Si photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing for achieving an overall production level of 200 MW/yr. Through the introduction of larger cells such as 150 mm diameter round cells and larger modules, and new crystal growing and wire saw improvements, daily manufacturing volumes for 100 MW/yr become manageable and capital and consumable costs are minimized. New laboratory results support the introduction of 20% efficient, 200 μm thick cells compared to conventional 15% efficient, 350 μm thick cells. A stable “solar grade” Si feedstock supply will be necessary to transform the Si PV industry to the 1000-5000 MW/yr level in order to contribute significantly to world energy needs
