Abstract :
This paper describes the lightning characteristics in Korea which is from LPATS (lightning position and tracking system), and the lightning performance calculation of power systems in KEPCO (Korea Electric Power Corporation). The LPATS has been introduced since 1995 in KEPCO, and we have developed the lightning parameters analysis program which can produce accumulative magnitude distribution of lightning current and IKL (isokeraunic level) map by LPATS data. In this paper, we introduce the LPATS system in KEPCO, the statistical distribution of lightning current parameters and the IKL map from 1996 to 2001. We estimate the LFOR (lightning flashover rate) of KEPCO´s transmission tower for 154 kV, 345 kV and 765 kV transmission lines. The selection of BIL (basic impulse level) for substation equipments is also described. In the calculation of lightning overvoltage, we used the EMTP (Electromagnetic Transient Program).
