Abstract :
We describe a modified link design which is suitable to compensate group velocity dispersion (GVD) in long distance, long repeater spacing single channel and WDM links and also minimises the influence of nonlinearities. The scheme leads to a modular link design facilitating the planning of optical point to point transmission systems and optical networks. Additionally it enables transmission with varying channel power caused by changing channel count in constant EDFA output power WDM systems or by component degradation. We introduce the design and compare it with the pre- and post-compensation techniques. We demonstrate the improvement due to modified link design in simulation and measurement for a 2×100 km link at 10 Gbit/s
