Abstract
We propose an estimator of the effective bandwidth, called Gaussian estimator using buffer measurement, for superposition of sources in IP networks. Our estimator does not rely on a specific traffic model and works only based on a small set of measurements of the workload in the buffer of a router. We conducted simulation experiments by using real traces, which were collected on a LAN at Chiba University and collected at an US-Japan link of WIDE backbone, and show that our proposed estimator performs better than other existing estimators that rely only on the measurement of traffic amount from sources.
