Abstract :
Examples of the application of artificial neural networks (ANNs) to real-world problems in factory automation are presented. A few of the advantages and disadvantages of ANNs in general are given. Three typical applications for visual classification, optical measuring, and adaptive control systems, including hardware requirements to achieve real-time speed, are shown. A brief outlook on further developments of ANNs in general and possible areas of application in particular as well as possible combinations with other methods is included. A deliberate mixture of classical, fuzzy, and neural techniques is advocated.<>
