Depending on the properties and features of this chip and its carrier, the author distinguishes between several types of cards, which are discussed. A comprehensive introduction to the various features of chip cards in general, the possibilities they open up, and the standards governing them is given. A brief discussion is included of two smart card applications from the field of telecommunication and access control. Interfaces and dimensions, and the performance of a smart card are considered.<>
