Abstract :
A mobile device is a compromise between size, weight, processing power, storage, sensing, communication bandwidth, and battery lifetime. Typical mobile phones consume about 0.5W for the display, 1W for communication, and 1W for computation. We investigate 5 basic approaches to saving energy and extending the battery life in mobile devices: · more stored energy better batteries · idle more efficiently hibernation, notifications, keep alive messages, · minimize display energy backlight, driver, animations, color · minimize communication energy cheapest bearer, data overhead, aggregation, femto · minimize computational energy process scaling, microarchitecture, application-specific hardware, offloading.
