Abstract
We have developed a new kind of all-silica optical fibre which has a hexagonal micronspaced array of sub-micron diameter air capillaries running along its axis. These photonic crystal fibres are produced by stacking and drawing silica glass capillaries, resulting in 2 1/2" dimensional periodic structures that can be many metres (potentially km) in length. These photonic crystal fibre offers new guiding properties, including guaranteed single mode operation at all wavelengths, subject to certain bend loss considerations
