Abstract
Partial differential equations for describing the dynamic behavior of the compositions within the rectifying and stripping sections of a distillation column are derived. Both liquid and vapor capacitances in each cell of the rectifier and stripper are considered. Some conceptual difficulties which exist in establishing the equivalence of the two forms of the column (i.e., the single-cell capacitance and twin-cell capacitance models) are explored. It is shown that the column with small vapor capacitance compares well with previously published work. Near-first-order behavior is a feature common to these findings. A nonminimum-phase effect is noticed for the column with larger vapor capacitance
