Abstract :
The Real Time Protocol (RTP) is an application-layer protocol with growing popularity in use with multimedia traffic on the Internet. This paper presents the idea of error-correcting gateways that can operate in real time and with software only. These gateways would be very useful in multimedia streaming over heterogeneous networks or for reliable multicasting when suitable forward error correction codes are implemented. Two different schemes were tested and the results compared. Various other application scenarios are also discussed in this paper
