Abstract :
The impact of form factor and technology is considered in the evolution of hard disk drives (HDDs). Low power and ruggedness are key features that distinguish the design of HDDs targeted for mobile storage applications. Electronic and electromechanical subsystems dissipate about equal amounts of power in idle mode. Form factor reduction generally results in improved power saving, with spin-up and seek power showing a linear dependence.
