Abstract
In this work we examine the bit error rate performance of IrDA links when influenced by physical layer and channel asymmetries. We find that such asymmetries cause differential link bit error rates, which in turn result in throughput degradation at the link and higher layer throughput. We develop a model for the asymmetries incorporating PHY layer parameters. We demonstrate that link layer throughput asymmetries are possible, and the magnitude of such throughput asymmetries is calculated. Practical examples of some typical user environments where asymmetries take place are examined
