Abstract :
As the throughput of Ethernet migrates from 10/100 Mbps to Gigabits, users´ desire to expand Ethernet scope grows simultaneously. However, the CSMA/CD mechanism restricts the maximum scope of Ethernet. Therefore, utilizing SDH/SONET, a technology for transmitting data over long distance, to overcome such limit has become promising. Different from the common solutions, which only support point-to-point connection of two Ethernets, the solution proposed here is applicable to more complex network topology. In addition, a model for the traffic generated by multiplexed hosts is put forward and the transmission rate on the SDH link to provide the prescribed QoS is calculated.
