Abstract :
Leicester´s CCTV system is not the best, largest, nor most technically advanced. It is however one of the oldest and what makes it different is that at its heart is a duct system covering several kilometres over the whole of the city centre. The author discusses the history of the system which started in 1964 when the Municipal Bus Company installed four cameras to monitor bus queues and approaching buses. The inception of the Traffic Control System in 1971 rendered the cameras obsolete for their original purpose. The system developments since 1985 are outlined. System details, system reliability, future expansion, and the rules adopted by Leicester for problem reduction, are discussed
