Abstract :
Synthesis in electromagnetic problems, in general, can be stated as optimisation of a single or a set of design variables {z} each within limit S, based on performance criteria Q (z). If A is the operator expressing the relationship between Q and z, the problem can be restated as maximising/minimising the function Q [A(z)], where z/spl isin/S. Difficulty arises in many cases, while establishing the relational operator A in a unique way. A practical approach called the performance index operator approach is suggested to aid in establishing the relationship. Application of the approach to radome design problem is also discussed.
