Abstract :
An analytical model for a nonpreemptive priority queueing system incorporating voice and data users in cellular mobile networks is presented. Upon arrival, handoff requests are inserted in a head of line (HOL) queue with finite capacity if no idle channels are available and the queue is not full. Priority is given to voice handoffs over data handoffs to avoid forced termination for voice users. This is achieved under a given time delay constraint for data users. A number of channels can be reserved for handover exclusive use. New attempts which find channels occupied are cleared from the system. For this priority policy we conduct a steady state queueing analysis when the mean service times of voice and data are different. Performance results show blocking and forced termination probabilities for both types of calls, waiting time for voice calls in the handoff area and delay experienced by data calls
