  • Abstract
This paper is the third of a series describing the development of the lithium polymer battery (LPB), a new battery technology for use as an energy storage system in telecommunication applications. The first two papers (1997, 1998) gave a description of this technology, its scientific background and its development toward a fully operational battery system. Laboratory testing, showing the very promising results at the cell and module levels, were also reported. The first field tests of LPB systems are underway. This paper briefly reviews the LPB technology focusing on its control, monitoring and communication systems that are very important for the execution of the tests. Test sites are briefly described and the preliminary results are presented and analyzed. An alpha LPB battery module was used in these tests. It is a development module used to validate the LPB technology and the module design. An engineering (beta) module will be developed based on the experience gained during the field tests
