Abstract :
We report the application of the time domain reflectometry (TDR) approach for the determination of the volumetric water content /spl theta/ in geophysical media with high dielectrical losses, such as bentonite. Until now, this method has been considered infeasible for this type of material. A new type of probe has been designed with which different values of the volumetric water content can clearly be discriminated by different travel times of the signals on the TDR probes. This has been verified both by experiment and theory.
