Abstract
The proposed multiple-access scheme for multimedia satellite networks is based on frequency division multiplexing (FDM) and integrates both circuit- and packet-switching techniques. A circuit switching technique is used to transmit stream traffic, such as real-time voice. A packet switching technique is used to transmit bursty traffic, such as interactive data. A ground radio network is also assumed for control signaling, and a tone sense multiple access/partial collision detection (TSMA/PCD) scheme is implemented on the ground radio network to enhance the performance of the integrated access scheme. This TSMA/PCD scheme allows ground stations to detect collision of simultaneous transmissions quickly. The average transmission delays for both stream and bursty traffic are analyzed
