  • Abstract
An evaluation of DVB started in 2000 in the Satellite and Wireless Networking Laboratory at the USA Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, DC. Early stages of this work were performed in conjunction with the NASA Glenn Research Center, while more recent work has focused primarily on applications particular to the Department of Defense. This paper provides an overview of the DVB standard and presents results of some of NRL´s early tests involving the protocol. Several DVB overlay reference configurations are discussed. Specific attention is given to the USA Navy´s Global Broadcast System (GBS), with a discussion of asymmetric data networking using DVB over GBS. Finally, the authors propose additional studies and testbed configurations designed to more directly demonstrate the applicability of DVB for DoD use, foremost of those being security.
