Abstract
This paper describes briefly the environment in which the UK National Grid Company´s energy management system must perform when being used as a tool to operate the power system in England and Wales. It highlights areas of concern to operating staff and offers solutions using expert system techniques. It covers the potential for future applications, discussing the probable impact of these changes on the role of the system operator
