Abstract :
The paper reports essential information on an ongoing research project aimed at developing a new computer-based technique for the integrated design and performance analysis of physical systems. A case study chosen to show how the technique can be implemented concerns a DC motor drive powered from the single-phase AC line. A DC voltage of fixed magnitude is supplied to the motor field circuit and a variable DC voltage for its armature is derived from a fully controlled all-thyristor bridge rectifier. The primary feature of the technique is that it enables all symbolic and numerical computations to be carried out in the environment of a single software package, which is Maple V. The successfully completed major part of the project comprises analytical solutions of system equations, harmonic analyses of currents and voltages, plots of their waveforms, and numerical values of system performance parameters. A selection of graphs obtained within the project is included in the paper
