Abstract :
This paper presents the result of an international ATM field trial using the high speed trans-Pacific link in a multicarrier environment. The trial was intended to address both ATM and higher layer issues, including end-to-end application performance. The issues of the ATM layer include standard conformance, performance characterization, and equipment interoperability. Higher layer issues are IP (Internet Protocol) over ATM, video transmission, TCP/IP and FTP throughputs. The main objectives are to demonstrate the feasibility of the multicarrier ATM network interworking over high speed links and to study the efficiency of the ATM network for supporting legacy services. Our trial results indicate, in general, the ATM layer performance is good. However, at higher layers, the TCP/IP and FTP throughputs are rather poor over the long ATM link
