Abstract
The contention based bandwidth request (BR) mechanism in heterogeneous networks has significant impact on the power consumption of mobile stations. The existing power saving algorithms conserves energy with reduced contention performance. However, both contention mechanism and power saving algorithm are to be effective so that the system will exhibit improved contention performance with reduced power consumption. Hence, this paper investigates various joint BR and power saving algorithms and suggests a joint approach that shows improved contention efficiency, reduced end-to-end delay, jitter and power consumption. Simulation results conclude that BR by means of message-code (MC) mechanism with combined cyclic binary exponent (CCBE) power saving algorithm performs better than code-code (CC) mechanism with combined power saving class (CPSC) algorithm.
