Abstract :
The world of satellite communications is on the verge of dramatic new developments with the expected deployment of low-Earth orbit/medium Earth orbit (LEO/MEO) satellite constellations such as IRIDIUM, GLOBALSTAR, and ODYSSEY. These systems will be capable of providing global coverage for personal (hand-held terminal based) communication services such as voice and data. In this paper, a number of issues concerned with the functionally efficient integration of GSM signalling and services with a LEO mobile communication satellite system are considered. It introduces modified GSM signalling procedures which provide for prioritised access and call set-up, and reduced call set-up delays
