Abstract :
Computer-aided acquisition and logistics support (CALS) is a joint Department of Defense (DoD) and industry initiative to improve weapons system quality, reduce development cycle time, and avoid cost through the use of digital technology in the generation, access, management, maintenance, distribution, and use of technical information. The authors explore the history of this movement and evaluate the solution being proposed. In addition, they attempt to provide some insight as to what industry-based actions are needed to assist in the development of a consistent and compatible CALS environment that is in concert with the needs of both government and industry to minimize the impacts to logistics engineering/information systems
