            Abstract :
We describe a high-speed LAN based on the WDM/SCM broadcast and select (B and S) switching technology. This LAN mainly handles streaming-media applications and can handle IP datagram applications by combining it with a conventional Ethernet-based LAN (hybrid LAN). To confirm the feasibility of the physical layer in the B and S WDM/SCM LAN, a 6-Mbit/s, 4,800-channel system (10 wavelengths with 80 subcarriers) using 64 QAM was used.
