  • Abstract
We have witnessed a progressive need throughout the power industry, to acquire primary data that can provide information and ultimately knowledge about the power system and primary equipment. This has become vitally important not only for operational, engineering, maintenance and power quality staff in the utility but also at the most senior levels of management within power utilities. Protection relays and control systems installed within the power system can also be used as data terminals for these purposes. The Internet is an attractive system that can link protection and control systems widely distributed within the power system. The implementation of Internet technologies in protection and control systems and in power equipment monitoring devices will allow free and flexible acquisition of power system information and equipment sensor information at remote locations. By utilizing general-purpose Internet technologies such as IP telecommunication and browser, widely distributed data can be collected easily. The commercial implementation of Internet technologies within products that feature these characteristics are already at an advanced stage in their application to the electric power system. This paper introduces basic configurations and new technologies of intranet-applied systems proposed by the authors and provides examples of where these systems have been implemented
