Abstract :
The paper describes the design and operation of a fault transient comparison scheme for multi-ended distribution feeders. In contrast to the conventional phase comparison method, the proposed scheme utilises fault transient signals rather than the 50 Hz component; hence measurement errors in the 50 Hz component phases between multi-ended distribution feeders will not affect this scheme. The scheme was modelled using EMTP. The model was used for the performance evaluation of the scheme. Fault transient signals simulated on typical 33 kV-distribution teed feeders via CTs were processed by three models installed at each feeder. The directions of fault transient signals measured at each feeder were compared. The scheme performance was evaluated using different fault conditions encountered on 33 kV distribution teed feeders. Results show that the proposed scheme is very promising
