Abstract
The development in communication systems with transmission substations in ESKOM created an opportunity for near real time access to the recording and monitoring devices on site. In 1998 a 24 hours support service was introduced to provide information from disturbance records analysis to National Control with the aim to enhance their operational decisions, immediately identify potential risks and improve response time to hidden failures. The service proved to be very effective and this paper describes in some detail ESKOM´s experience with its implementation. The most important benefits are highlighted with a few practical examples and possible future developments in ESKOM are discussed
