Abstract :
A new directional detection module for protecting a transmission line is proposed. The proposed approach is based on the use of a recurrent neural network technique with temporal processing abilities. The directional module network is tested by simulation and field fault data. The proposed relay has been also implemented on a DSP board and its behavior is investigated on a physical power system model. Studies show that the proposed approach is able to detect the direction of a fault on a transmission line rapidly and correctly. It is suitable to realize a fast transmission line directional comparison protection scheme
