Abstract :
In this study, strongly nonlinear, i.e. large-amplitude, structures are discussed which arise by a secondary bifurcation from a primary pattern or by a subcritical bifurcation from the homogeneous state. The stability properties of localized structures and the transient dynamics of a switch-on process of a localized structure are studied in experiment and theory.
