Abstract :
State-of-the-art avionics architectures are highly distributed systems with fault-tolerant capabilities. The distribution of resources coupled with recovery capabilities make these systems resistant to failure during an aircraft mission. The typical mission requires a variety of computational functions that must be provided through the architecture. By providing redundancy of functional modules and efficient reconfiguration of the available CPU resources, further fault-tolerance is achieved. The authors discuss the issues involved in creating an expert-system-based redundancy and reconfiguration manager for an integrated architecture, including the use of a Prolog-style interpreter written in Ada and a rule processor interface generator (RPIG)
