This paper explores the application of local and compensated overvoltage protection on Eskom´s transmission system, giving examples of problems encountered. The paper describes the need for overvoltage protection; the categorization of overvoltages; application solutions; and Eskom´s newly adopted philosophy to improve the application of overvoltage protection
