Abstract :
This paper describes how modern distance relays initially installed to provide load immune protection, have now become an integral part of an optimised maintenance regime. Fault data collected from the relay is used to confirm the accuracy of the fault location equipment and verify the fundamental electrical characteristics of the system. The interrogation of data to determine types of faults on the overhead line is evaluated. Also discussed is how relay data has been used to develop a risk based maintenance strategy which minimises staff exposure to trackside hazards, and reduces the time and cost of overhead line maintenance and repairs
