Abstract :
The authors describe an optical backplane developed to demonstrate the advantages of high-performance optical interconnections and supporting technologies. The optical transmission medium chosen for the backplane is multimode, graded-index optical fiber. Supporting circuitry includes an optical receiver, a high-speed optical transmitter, and electronics for control and data formatting. Results from characterization and environmental tests, including the demonstration of the reliable transmission of serial data at 1 Gb/s, are reported
