Abstract :
The concept of the partially smoothed Wigner distribution (WD) for signal analysis is introduced. Correct marginals are positivity ape two desirable but incompatible requirements for bilinear distributions. By sacrificing both these properties, partially smoothed WD can be used to improve the localization of events in time and frequency. Since the resolutions in time and frequency can be specified independently of each other, this is a powerful tool with wide applications.<>
